Asahan Mountain, here we come!

RAC Kota Melaka planned a weekend away wild camping (okay, its not so wild) on 13-14th June 2009. I was a little concerned as the forecast wasn't too optimistic.

The 15 of us still wild camped, cleaning the rubbish strewn by irresponsible campers and setting up our tents in the rain...

Thank god, the rain stopped. DRR Wee, guests Simon and Jacky were giving us professional development lesson on camp pitching:

With the guide from the professionals, we successfully set up our 'bungalows' *yippee*:

As for the fire ,the guys headed by Simon went wood hunting and managed to set fire out of wet wood! (thumbs up to the guys!!)

While the guys were busy wood hunting, the girls learned photography (another professional development) from Rtr Robin:

What is camping without chilling out in the crystal clear water while sipping on a can of beer (a few actually). While the guys sipped their beer, the girls were busy bathing with the fishes:

As for dinner, President Eugene practically shifted his whole kitchen to the camping site (wok, pans, billy cans, Bunsen burner, kettle, ladle, etc) for cooking.

This was what we had for dinner: Chicken cooked in natural chicken broth, omelet and bean sprout. Do not be deceived by this photo, the food was awesome!!

We spent whole night by the camp fire sing along (thanks to guitarist President Eugene, Rtr Eddie and guest Jacky), melting the marshmallows, barbecuing sausages and chicken wings:

We left Asahan the very next day after another dip in the water. We came home with a community service done, professional developments learned, fun-filled fellowship, unforgettable memories and a broken toenail.

Thank you all for without your participations RDC 0809, held at Orkid Hotel 17th-19th April, would not be a success.

Discover, Fun and Fellowship in Melaka started with ice breaking
on the 17th (guess who's back is this?)

All rotaractors geared up to search for their soulmate
during the ice breaking. Some clues given were hard such as:
"I am having sex this morning."

Killing a member with a sword, male wearing clogs, drinking bitter tea and performing magic tricks were among the tasks given

Little did they know, the pictures taken were to be transformed into a story and to be presented the next day, the 19th.

A bag of blood can save three lives!

Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka organizes a blood donation drive every year, to help the blood bank replenishes their collection. However this year, to embrace the Rotary effort in reducing child mortality, the blood donation drive was held together with child mortality awareness campaign in conjunction with World Rotaract Week. This project was organized together with sponsoring club Rotary Club of Kota Melaka

On 15^th March 2009, headed by our organizing chairperson DRR Wee Yik Chuang, we gathered at the top floor of Mahkota Parade at about 12.30pm. Our blood donation campaign was conducted at a vacant space next to the cinema. The management of Mahkota Parade was kind enough to let us use the place free of charge. The blood bank personnel from the Melaka General Hospital, headed by Madam Annie, arrived soon after and we helped her and her staffs to set up the chairs and tables. Posters on child mortality were put up all around the pillars surrounding the blood donation drive. We started registering donors at 1pm. Our duty was to convince potential donors, register them and to educate about child mortality. After that, the rest of blood donation procedure will be taken care of by the hospital staffs.

Registration was handled by two members of our club, while the rest of us armed with flyers went around trying to convince the public to donate. On the other hand, two more members are armed with flyers to explain to the public concerning child mortality and the importance of vaccination.

We set out to get 50 bags of blood. At the end of the day, at 5pm, we managed to collect 53 bags of blood with a few Rh negative blood bags. Thank you everyone, the donors, the hospitals staffs, rotarians and rotaractors.

18th February 2009 marked the 20th year of RAC Kota Melaka's existance.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KOTA MELAKA!!

Post celebration party was held on 21st February 2009, whereby Rotarians, Rotaractors, past presidents of RACKM and friends gathered at Tanjung Puteri, Klebang. Thanks to PP Anthony from RC Kota Melaka for allowing the event to be held at his condominium.

The event started with FOOD. Barbequed chicken wing, home cooked curry and salad! After filling the empty tummies, we waltzed through memory lane by presenting montages about past club activities.

On this memorable day, 2 members were inducted: Rtr Lim Su Ann and Rtr Jeffrey Cho.

Thanks to PP Greg, everyone was entertained with brain-teasers and charades.

Success story of Hunt 4 Fun+D

The night before the hunt was a nightmare... I guess many organizing committee did not manage to sleep. All were praying for a good weather the next day. However, the sound of the loud thunder woke me up 4am. Oh gosh! Dare not to think about Plan B that we do not have. At 7am, woke up and hurried to the door to check the sky. Guess our prayers worked. The rain subsided and soon the sun shine the Taming Sari area... Thank you God.

At 8.30am, 23 registered teams arrived with dictionary, thesaurus, camera and lots of enthusiasm. We were touched to see PP Kua strolling across the parking lot to join the hunt. Despite being a lone ranger, he took up the courage and became the only one representing Rotary Club of Kota Melaka.

Organizing chairperson, PP Gregory Sim, briefed on the rules and regulation and officially kicked off the hunt at 8.45am. The marshals, DRR Wee and President Eugene, cycled around the route to ensure safety and that no participants strayed too far. The hunt lasted for 3 hours and all teams adjourned to Friends Café where lunch was sponsored.

The closing ceremony was conducted where answers were revealed. 5 consolation prizes were presented by President Eugene and DRR Wee. PP Kua from Rotary Club of Kota Melaka gave away the 3 grand prizes to the winning teams. This event was successful thanks to the sponsorship given by KAJ group, PB Realty Sdn Bhd, Mamee Double Decker Distribution Sdn Bhd, TeoBros Development Sdn Bhd, Bersatu Hati Enterprise Sdn Bhd and Friends Cafe. The whole event ended at 2pm.

Following the event, the cash (RM2075) collected and the provisions bought by the participants during the hunt, being onions and baked beans, were presented to the home (Differently Able Children and Old Folks Centre, Alor Gajah, Melaka) on the same day. Thank you participants. sponsors, all members and god for the blessed weather. For without you, this hunt may not be this successful. Hope to see you again next year!

Fantastic Jogjakarta

Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka and Rotaract Club of Semarang Simpang Lima has a sister pact signed for four years now and a year of friendship pact with Rotaract Club of Ikeda, Osaka, Japan. We had been exchanging bulletin with both clubs about respective club’s updates, and had been visiting each other.

On 26^th February 2009, DRR Wee Yik Chuang, President Eugene Tan and Rtr Sreedaran took an early flight to attend three days two nights conference in Jogjakarta to meet our sister club, the Rotaract Club of Semarang Simpang Lima.

This conference of 3 days (27^th February 2009 to 1^st March 2009) was the district’s trainer programme where the first day was dedicated to training rotaractors holding posts in their respective clubs. DRR Wee Yik Chuang was invited to be the trainer for President post whereas President Eugene attended the International Service session and Rtr Sreedaran attended the community service session. The club presentation session resumed after that whereby President Eugene presented about Malaysia, District 3310 and about club’s recent activities. It was an eye opener for them as they witness the selection of DRRN. All nominees were seated on the stage, like in an Oprah Show, and was interviewed by DRR and DRRN on their plans for D3400. Crowds went crazy! Shouting and chanting the nominee that they were supporting.

Apart from training, participants were transported to the earthquake site in Jogjakarta to plant trees on day two. Community service adjourned in the evening followed by a night of cultural exchange whereby every club presented a awesome performance: band from kitchen equipment and so on.

The conference ended, members of the club travelled back to Malaysia feeling tired but with new friends from district 3400. Till next year, see you in Surabaya

Chinese zodiac

Ever wonder why the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig were selected and in that order? Or why was the cat not selected? There are many versions of the story, this is one of them. Of course this is not a true story but it helps us to remember the characteristics of some of the animals and also explain why the cat was not selected!

An ancient sage wanted to select 12 animals to form the zodiac. He wanted to be fair and he sent a message out to all the animals to gather at a certain spot on a certain date. The first 12 animals to arrive will be selected and the zodiac arranged in their order of arrival.

The rat and the cat made an agreement to wake each other up early the next day to start the journey. The cunning rat however did not do that, but started out on the journey much early hoping to be included in the zodiac.

The ox realized that he is slower than many of the other animals, decided to start the journey the night before and walk all night to reach the destination.

On the designated day, the animals started arriving. Ox was the first to reach the vicinity and thought he would be the first animal on the zodiac. However unknown to the ox, the rat was actually riding on the ox’s back the entire journey. And just before the ox reached the designated spot the rat jumped over the ox and took the first place.

This is also the reason why the Rat is described as intelligent and cunning while the Ox is hardworking and persistent. Close behind the Ox was the charismatic Tiger. Hopping quietly behind was the prudent Rabbit, who passed the head strong and ambitious Dragon unnoticed (lucky rabbit!), with the wise but tricky Snake slithering not far behind.

Galloping happily at the back was the high-spirited Horse, joined then by the sentimental Goat. Next to arrive were the versatile, charlatan Monkey, and the Rooster, full of color and bravado. The lovable Dog came next, brightly wagging his tail behind him.

Last of all came the Pig, gallant, entertaining and ever popular.

The Cat never forgave the Rat thou and became mortal enemies ever since!

Chinese New Year is a festival to celebrate the start of the Chinese lunar calendar. Considered one of the most important dates for Chinese, it is a celebration of togetherness between family members as well as friends.

The club celebrated Chinese New Year together this year at Machap Baru again! After having such a wonderful time last year at Machap Baru, we decided to go back for more!!!

So, on the 12^th of February, 14 of us took that hour’s drive from town, across the Durian Tunggal Dam to this small village across the lake that is famous for its exotic spread. With some old faces and new guest, we challenged ourselves to what seemed like an episode of Fear Factor. Among the less ordinary meats served were frogs, wild boar and the even less ordinary meats, the squirrel and flying fox.

Despite having to challenge ourselves to take the first bite for many of us, the taste soon got to our palates and before we knew it, we were ordering second helpings. By the end of the dinner, all of us were stuffed to the brim. Overall, it was another wonderful adventure and as always, warmth fellowship. Till the next new year!

Hunt 4 Fun+D is a charity treasure hunt RACKM is organising to raise funds for Differently Able Children and Old Folks Centre, Alor Gajah, Melaka. This centre is 10 months old with 9 inmates and 3 permanent caretakers. With monthly cost of RM4400 needed to run this centre, there is a pressure need to support this centre.

HunT 4 Fun+D is basically a walk hunt along the designated route. Clues are given. All a team needs to do is to find the answers among the shops along the designated route, within the allocated time. Interested to join HunT 4 Fun+D?

APRRC spells FUN!

Rotaractors around Asia Pacific region awaits this event every year. As this is the only event established to bring Rotaractors from around the Asia Pacific region to one venue, with the objective of establishing a common ground for discussions, as well as affording a platform for the sharing of views and ideas.

Without hesitation, DRR Wee Yik Chuang grab the first seat available in AirAsia and flew to Bali, Indonesia to attend the 5th APRRC (Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference). As a result, this 5 days 4 nights event (19th - 23rd November 08) was among the best days of his life.

Thumbs up to Rotaract clubs in Indonesia for the excellent job! Besides the normal agenda of serious plenary and conference sessions, fun filled cultural bazaar, cultural night and beach games, all delegates were given a chance to release baby turtles in a community service project.
The conference ended with the announcement of the next 6th APRRC to be held in Singapore by our very own District 3310. So rotaractors, what are you waiting for!!!!!!

RYLA 08 (Rotary Leadership Youth Awards) was held 4th- 7th December 2008 at Tanjung Sutera Resort, Sedili Besar, Johor. This event was organized by RC Johor Centennial, RC E-Club 3310 and RC Kota Tinggi with theme 'Discovering the REAL me'.

The cruelty of Alzheimer’s disease, which is the most common form of dememtia, is that it attacks the brain, profoundly altering who we are. It steals from us our most basic functions and fundamentals pleasures at the very time when we should be enjoying the fruits of life-long labor.

Rotary Club of Kota Melaka (RCKM) together with Alzheimer Disease Foundation Malaysia (ADFM), organized an awareness campaign in Mahkota Parade following a success public workshop held on June 20, 2008 in Manipal Melaka College, Melaka. This awareness held from October 18-19, 2008 drew approximately 90 members of the public and Dr. Nurul Wafa bt Hussain, Pakar Psikiatri Hospital Melaka spoke on Dementia. Talks were well received by the audience, and was held in Bahasa Melayu, English and Mandarin.

The talk was beneficial as rotaractors and members of public now know that Alzheimer's disease is progressive, which means that it worsens over time. It causes areas of the brain to shrink (loss of brain nerve cells) and is fatal. The disease has three stages: mild, moderate and severe. The resulting symptoms start with memory loss and other cognitive deficits, advancing to major personality changes and eventual loss of control over bodily functions (bathing, brushing one's teeth, wear clothes, etc). To help members of family that is struck by Alzheimer, RCKM will be starting an Alzheimer's Disease Support Group in Melaka at Polyclinic Community Peringgit, with Dr Haji Suhaimi (Family Physician of KK Peringgit) and Dr Nurul Wafa as medical advisor. The new support group should go public soon.

Its the time of the year again for the moon goddess to visit earth. Thanks to Rtn Anthony and Rtr Eddie for allowing us to crash in their penthouse to view the full moon. In addition, Rtn Anthony entertained us by playing the piano whole night and shared the history and the legend behind mooncake festical. It was a GREAT GREAT night!

Brainstorming session starts when no sticks or any solid materials were available to hang tanglung. However, we finally did it by using a plastic spoon. How did we achieved the equilibrium? I wonder...

After many trials, we just gave up and......

Five members from RAC Kota Melaka traveled to attend RAC Batu Pahat installation on 23rd August 2008 to take hold their role as the phantom (or at least they tried to be). As always, the food was good and the entertainment was even better. Throughout the installation, we were entertained by the energy booming break dance performed by a group of talented teenagers. Thumbs up to RAC Batu Pahat for the excellent installation... Good job!

Down South We Go...

August is the month of installation. This time, we traveled down South to Johor Bahru to attend Rotaract Club of Johor Bahru 40th Installation at M-Suite Hotel, Danga Bay with the theme 'A Touch Of Red'. Red is suppose to bring good luck, but we came home empty handed physically(DRR Wee refused to draw our numbers during lucky draw..=p).
Just joking! Nevermind that, we had so much fun and laughed like lions and hyenas there! We were overdosed with fantastic entertainments: salsa dance, breakdance, tango and some games, Way the go RAC JB!!!!!!

A Start of A Good Year

Job well done everyone! A smooth flowing installation marked the start of a new term. Congratulations to Organising Chairperson PP Gregory Sim and all participants for the wonderful night!

19th Installation of Rotaract Club of Kota Melaka kicked off on 9th August 2008 at Aldy Hotel with the theme 'Stars of Bollywood'. The theme said it all. Aldy Hotel's rooftop was draped in sarees, entrance decorated with 'kolam', and Hindi songs filled the air for the night. Guests came from as far as Singapore and JB were treated with a dose of Indian dance performed by Rtr Ruba and guest Sunitha, a comedy pantomime by the members of the club and of course lucky draw.
